#8 Market Adoption of Talent Pools

Hi Talent Pool Divers,

Some of you might be aware of the monthly meet-ups I host with industry experts.

Our last gathering brought together 15 seasoned professionals from the contingent workforce industry.

The topic? You guessed it: Talent Pools.

We dove into their various forms and how the market is adopting them.

From the early innovators like Upwork and Toptal to the emerging trend of Direct Sourcing,

The insights were enlightening. It's clear:

we're in the early stages of a talent acquisition revolution.

Let’s dive in.

The Landscape of Workforce Dynamics

You know me, Before diving deep, we’ll do the stats first and set the stage by understanding the broader workforce dynamics.

The traditional 9-to-5 job is gradually making way for a more adaptive, contingent workforce.

According to data from Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA), businesses spent $4.4 trillion on contingent labor globally in 2020, with roughly 61% of that being on independent contractor

(= a self-employed individual or business that provides goods or services to another entity under terms specified in a contract)

services, and only 9% on workers provided through staffing firms the shift is palpable.

And as regular readers know, I've always emphasized the growing importance of the contingent workforce, backed by these numbers.

The age-old hiring methods, rooted in staffing firms and traditional pipelines, are becoming less relevant.

The rise of talent pools, especially with direct sourcing, heralds a new era. And with direct sourcing accounting for 15% of global spend in 2020, the writing's on the wall.

The Evolutionary Journey of Talent Pools

Every transformative concept has its evolutionary milestones:

  • Introduction: The market starts its exploration with Talent Pools, understanding its foundational concepts and potential benefits.

  • Initial Mastery: A select group of forward-thinking companies embark on their journey with Talent Pools, reaping the initial benefits. I believe we're here, with a few companies leading the charge.

  • Plateau: After the initial successes, there's a period of stabilization. The challenge? Maintaining momentum and ensuring Talent Pools become the norm.

  • Advanced Mastery: Talent Pools integrate seamlessly into the market's talent acquisition strategy, becoming the standard rather than the exception.

Understanding Talent Pool Adoption: A Closer Look

Two main approaches to talent pools have emerged:

  1. The Rise of Marketplaces: Platforms like Upwork and Toptal set the tone. They might remind some of the progressive staffing agencies, but their innovative use of talent pool technology sets them apart. They've shown traditional staffing agencies the vast potential that awaits.

  2. Direct Sourcing: A newer concept, but one that's gaining traction. At its heart, direct sourcing is about building and nurturing direct relationships with talent. While platforms like Upwork have paved the way, direct sourcing is the next step in this evolution.

In essence, while marketplaces have showcased the potential of talent pools, direct sourcing is painting a picture of the future. Both are vital pieces of the talent acquisition puzzle.

The 'And' Philosophy in Talent Acquisition

In talent acquisition, it's not about 'either-or'. It's about 'and'. Direct sourcing, staffing, marketplaces - they're all integral parts of a larger framework. Each channel has its strengths, and when harmonized, they offer a holistic talent supply.

      The Collective Push Towards Adoption

The future demands more than passive databases. It's about fostering relationships. Platforms like Bubty are at the forefront, offering relationship technology inspired by social media dynamics. But it's not just about technology; it's about a collective effort.
